To the family of Tom Penn: I am Ciara Byrne's mother. She is a resident at VanDuyn and resided on the 7th for with Tom for many years. I only just found out yesterday that Tom passed away. I'm sure you know how everything is kept very secretive there. My husband and I were so very, very sorry. I always had the chance to chat with Tom. He had a great sense of humor and I enjoyed fooling with him. I also remembered how he loved gambling. He will be missed a great deal. It will no longer be the same without him. Our thoughts and prayers will be with him and all of you. Sincerely, Anne, Billy and Ciara Byrne

I've known Tom for about 12 years. Even though he was unable to walk around, he got around. He was funny...joking around as he closed the activities room door using his power chair when I was putting my lunch away leaving me in a dark room. He was my teacher, teaching me how to be a caring and understanding therapist with compassion. He was a friend to many. He roomed with one of my friends a few years ago and gave him hope. He taught me how to listen when he spoke. Tom lived postively touching the hearts of many. He will be missed physically but his spirit will live on.

I am very sorry to hear about Tom. He was a great poker player and could never turn down bingo! He was a riot to be around and could always bring a smile to your face. He will be missed by all at VDHH. He'll always be a winner in my books.
