Ivan D. Purdy, 69, of Baldwinsville, NY passed away Friday at St. Josephs Hospital in Syracuse, NY. He was born in Greene, NY and raised in Cambridge, NY. Ivan received his bachelors degree in accounting at Bryant College and his masters degree in Science Education from Syracuse University. He taught eighth grade science for several years, worked in sales and coached basketball in various academic settings for many years. He had a zeal and passion for competition and sports but especially basketball. He worked at the Syracuse University summer basketball camp for 25 years and also coached at the Bobby Knight camp and the New York Knicks camp. The SU basketball program was near and dear to his heart. He also competed in tennis and senior softball. He participated in the Empire State Senior games and qualified for the National Senior Olympics several times. He was the commissioner of the Greater Baldwinsville Church Softball League for many years. Ivan had an enthusiasm for life and loved people. He enjoyed helping others, socializing, music, dancing, reading, gardening, garage sales and his camp on Hedges Lake, NY. He was active in Grace Church for many years. Survivors: his wife of 42 years, the former Susan L. Cox; his beloved dog Spunky; two sisters, Eleanor Withers and Dorothy Miller; his brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Mary Purdy; his 100 year old aunt, Dorothy Cady; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Services: 12:00pm Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at Grace Episcopal Church, 110 Oswego Road, Baldwinsville, NY with fellowship and sharing memories to follow in the church hall.
