Obituary of Beverly Jean Hewitt

Beverly Jean Hewitt, 91, of Baldwinsville, passed away peacefully at Syracuse Home on December 16, surrounded by a wealth of loving family members. Born July 18, 1926 in Pasadena, California, the youngest of two daughters of Betty and Leon Corthell, she spread her passion for life and unconditional love of people in wide and generous circles that continue to ripple through the lives of all who have been fortunate to cross her path. Her full life included over 40 years of service as a registered nurse, the bulk of which was spent at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse in her preferred area of labor and delivery. An earlier nursing experience in Chicago led to a chance meeting with Robert Hewitt, and the magic of their mutual love of dancing resulted in a 1951 marriage and eventual move to upstate NY, followed by a steadily growing family. At last count, she leaves behind 6 children, 13 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. The large hole left by the untimely passing of Robert in 1973 she ultimately filled by enhanced attention to family and friends, becoming even more the orchestrator of social activities and daily celebrations alike. In addition to a life-long love of bridge and reading, she expanded her pursuits to include tennis, golf, camping, volunteer work, and traveling. Her focus and acumen made her a friendly but formidable competitor in any card game or sport she engaged in. When she added golf to her many passions, at one point she was playing in at least 3 different leagues and subbing in another, much to the delight of her many partners. Among these, retired Methodist minister Gordon Knapp was a favorite, and her many decades of membership and involvement in the Baldwinsville First United Methodist Church gave her much pleasure and many more lifelong friendships. In her life of social and experiential wealth, Beverly never saw boundaries or differences between people, instead accepting everyone on their own terms. She believed that some combination of love, music, dancing, food, wine, and heartfelt conversation was the prescription that all souls needed to thrive. Along with her many friends, she leaves behind a large and grateful family, including but not limited to her favorite daughter, Ione (Kelly), sons Scott (Connie), Gary (Myriam), Steve (Sharon), Jeff (Theresa), and Don (Jennie), grandchildren Kevin, Ryan, Kyle, Colin, Rick, Robbie, Jamee, David, Brian, Jessica, Chandra, Rachel, and Maya, and great-grandchildren, Zack and Asiyah. Services are 11:00 am, Friday, December 22, at the Baldwinsville First United Methodist Church, 17 W Genesee St. Calling hours are 4-7 pm, Thursday, December 21 at Falardeau Funeral Home, 93 Downer St, Baldwinsville.
