Frederick Elverton Woods, 89, passed away peacefully at his home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, on Wednesday, November 2, 2016.
Fred was born in New Bremen, New York, on February 10, 1927, to Floyed Woods and Iva Rector Woods. Upon graduation from Carthage High School in 1944, Fred enlisted in the US Army. He served in the 9th Infantry Division in Europe, remaining in Germany until 1948. After returning home, Fred attended Syracuse University until he was recalled to active duty in his senior year, serving 10 months in Korea from 1950 to 1951. In 1953, he was graduated from Syracuse University with bachelors and masters degrees in education, and was engaged in teaching before entering the real estate business. A realtor and appraiser in Syracuse, New York, for 35 years, Fred was a past-president of the Greater Syracuse Board of REALTORS and the New York State Association of REALTORS, as well as a director of the National Association of REALTORS. He was named REALTOR of the Year for both the Greater Syracuse Board of REALTORS and the New York State Association of REALTORS, and was involved in the development of the New York State Graduate REALTORS Institute. Fred was also an instructor of real estate courses in New York State from 1959 to 1981.
While living in Fayetteville, Fred was a member of the Onondaga Council of the Boy Scouts of America, a trustee of the Village of Fayetteville, New York, and served as a board member of the Onondaga County Public Library System. Fred was also a member of the Fayetteville Central City Masonic Lodge #305, where he was a Past-Master, and of the American Legion Post #821, Clayton, New York.
Fred lived in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, since 1991 where he was a member of the Coronado Community United Methodist Church of New Smyrna Beach, a past member of its Finance Committee, and an usher. From 1992 to 2008, Mr. Woods was public relations director for Loveland Groves in Edgewater, FL.
Fred enjoyed many sports, including skiing, tennis, golf, and fishing. He and his wife, Marti, had a great love of boating and enjoyed their summers at Cape Vincent, New York, on the St. Lawrence River.
He is survived by his wife, Martha (Marti); daughters Patricia Anne Woods (Richard Andersen), Becket, MA; Sara Wiseman (Dan), Sackets Harbor, NY; son, Michael, Three Mile Bay, NY; and his five grandchildren, Chris, Kacey, Ben, David and Kaylee; a sister Beverly Loyst, East Aurora, NY; several nieces and nephews; and grand nieces and nephews. Fred is predeceased by his brother, Walter.
A memorial service will be held at the Falardeau Funeral Home, 93 Downer Street, Baldwinsville, New York, on Saturday, November 19, 2016, at 12:30pm. Interment will take place in Hermon Cemetery in Hermon, New York, at a later date.
