Please share a memory of Richard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Richard James “Jim” McNeill, CDR, USN, (RET), 78, joined his fellow military veterans who perished before him on November 11, 2008. Born on June 19, 1930 in Baldwinsville, New York to Archardbald James McNeill and Floy Loveless, his early years were greatly influenced by his sister Dorothy and her husband Cecil Reeves who he admired greatly and loved as a father figure. After graduating from Syracuse Central High School, he was befriended by the late Tony Rausa and his wife Jo, their son John who assisted him greatly in obtaining his degrees in Agriculture and Electrical Engineering from Union College, Schenectady, New York. He believed in and loved his country and served faithfully and honorably with the U.S. Navy Submarine Service for more than 20 years until he retired on March 1, 1971. During his military career he received numerous medals, awards, commendations and campaign ribbons such as The Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for service in Korea, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Citation with the Gallantry Cross to name a few. He married his first love “Mickey” who preceded him in death and blessed him with three children and seven grandchildren all of whom have survived both parents. On January 20, 1978 he married his sweetheart Lorraine Despain, who he has resided with for over 30 years until his passing and his faithful four legged companion Suzy Que. In lieu of flowers the family request that you make a donation in his name to any Veteran Organization of your choosing.
