Obituary of Joseph Tormey Hopkins

Joseph Tormey Hopkins, 87, of Niskayuna and St. Augustine, FL died April 6, 2005 at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine. A native of Syracuse, Mr. Hopkins served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Captain in the paratroopers, in the Pacific Theater. He also served 20 years in the Army Reserves, retiring as a Major. He was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, Syracuse University and Syracuse University College of Law. He was an Assistant Attorney General of the State of New York, and headed the Bureau of Claims and Litigation for several years before returning to private practice. Mr. Hopkins was a communicant of St. Helens Church in Schenectady, where he served as lector, and of St. Anastasia in St. Augustine.
Survivors: his wife of 57 years, Faith Dolan Hopkins; two daughters, Joy Hopkins of Burlington, VT and Sarah Hopkins of Middle Grove; four sons, and two daughters-in-law, Joseph T. Hopkins, Jr. of Lagunitas, CA, Thomas Hopkins of Middle Grove, Daniel and Stacy Hopkins and Mark and Pamela Hopkins of Schenectady; six grandchildren, Faith Livak and Satira Lord of Burlington, VT, Taylor Hopkins of Lagunitas, CA, Sean Hopkins of Middle Grove, Kara Schultz of Saratoga Springs, and Lily M. White of Middle Grove; and three step-grandchildren, Derek Taylor, Benjamin and Jillian Zaloga of Schenectady; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathleen and Dr. Charles Elliott of Fayetteville, Adelaide and Robert Ealy of Rochester, Mary Martha and Richard Hanlon of Syracuse, and Mary Millicent and Robert Hastings of East Syracuse and Naples, FL and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, P. Augustus Hopkins and Florence Tormey Hopkins; two brothers, Christopher J. Hopkins and Peter A. Hopkins, Jr.; three sisters, Patricia Moran, Genevieve Bardenett, and Rosalind Pristash.
Services: A funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, April 11, 2005 at 9:00am at St. Anastasia Church, 5205 A1A South, St. Augustine. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be announced at a later date to be held in Schenectady. Falardeau Funeral Home, Baldwinsville has charge of local arrangements.
