Janet Barbara (Gassner) Burns, 84 of Baldwinsville, NY, formerly of Jamestown, NY, succumbed after a lengthy illness at Syracuse Home in Baldwinsville. The eldest daughter of Joseph and Luella (Bellosa) Gassner, Janet was born on October 28, 1930 in Schenectady, NY and was raised in Utica. After high school she received her nursing certificate while working at St. Joseph’s Infant Home and in November 1950 she married Robert "Bob" Burns of Utica. Together they lovingly raised seven children. As her youngest was preparing to enter college, Janet decided to resume her education and in1990, aged 59, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from SUNY Fredonia. Janet was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, her parents and her brother, Dr. Edward Gassner and his wife, Shirley (Butler). She is survived by her children Kevin (Cecilia) Burns of San Diego, CA; Patricia (Paul) White of Clay, NY; Eileen (William) Tallmadge of Afton, NY; Stephen (Jean) Burns of Machias, ME; Peggy Burns of Orlando, FL; Kathleen (T.R.) Lind of Oviedo, FL; and Michael (Carol) Burns of Nellison, NY; 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, her brother William “Fritz” (Judith) Gassner of Utica, NY, sister Elizabeth (John) Reilly of Albuquerque, NM, and dozens of nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Peg Junquist. Unpretentious, fun loving, and always in search of her next adventure, Janet loved sunshine and camping and was active in Family Campers and RVers for 40 years. Her life will be celebrated at a mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Baldwinsville on April 10, 2015. Family will receive guests at the church from 10am to 11am with the mass to follow at 11am. She will be interred alongside her husband at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Clinton, NY. at a later date. In lieu of flowers, gifts of remembrance to local Lions Club or Association for the Blind are appreciated.
