To the family of Don Austin - my sympathies to all, he was a great father, son, brother, and uncle. He gave me great advice like what kind of furnace to put it, car to buy, who to invest my money with ... He was always quick to give "you a line" with a straight face and you left wondering if it was a line or true sometimes. I remember when I changed the pepsi inside his bottle for rootbeer . he took one sip and looked straight at me - I didn't flinch. But shortly after my picture was in the paper and Linda told me "I don't know why your picture was cut out and put on the table, it's been there for a couple weeks." He never did pull one on me but to finally get The Duck was like, yeah!

Linda and Aunt Sissy and Tommy (and anyone who knew DD), my deepest sympathies go out to you. My earliest memories of him were during the holidays at Aunt Sissy's house on Valley Drive. My sister, Shannon, would cry and cower away every time she would see him. He never did anything "scary." But Shannon was scared. And to this day I haven't got a clue why? DD was one of the nicest and wisest family members we had. I solidified that fact last Christmas holiday when my mom and Aunt Sissy and I went to visit him (and Linda) and chatted for a couple of hours about Asheville, NC and some long lost relatives who had something to do with steam engines. As I grow older I cherish these moments. Without them, history would be lost. Thanks DD, I will miss you and your knowledge.

Linda, I can not begin to tell you how sad it is for me to say good bye to Don. I met him in 1983. I have always called him Mr. Austin. I remember a fire back in the 80s in Memphis. He was so cool, calm and collective. I thought, man when I get older I hope I could be just like him. I truly looked up to him. I can remember all the nights that I was at his race shop to all hours of the morning. I would loose track of time just chatting with him. Although we may have had different opinions, I completely respected him. He was not only a mentor to me in the fire service and race track he was my friend. I am now proudly the Deputy Chief in the fire depart and hope the fire fighters can learn from me what I learned from him. I will truly miss him.

We were saddened to receive the word of Don's passing. What a great guy and a hard worker. We enjoyed our motorcyle ride with Linda and Don last year. He was always there to lend Dan a helping hand. What a great humor he had and he would tell things the way they were. May Don rest in peace. Our sympathy to Linda, Tom, Terri and Will Austin and all of his family.

Linda,Tom,
I just saw Duck a couple weeks ago at the Hydroplant Water Rescue, As one of the current Chiefs of the Baldwinsville Fire department. I need the community to know that everyone in the fire service will truly ,miss Don's advise. If I ever needed anything welded at the station , home or work. Don was always there for me. If I needed to know anything about a car or a race he was the one stop place to go for the right answer. I served under Don when he was a Fire Chief back in the 80's and the knowledge he passed on to all of us is pricless. I will miss Duck send my best to his family if I do not get to see you this week. My family's Thoughts and prayers got out to you both,

My friend Donny is gone and I'm crushed. I remember, years ago, when I moved in next to the shop and met Donny for the first time. It was "so cool" to stop in and talk racin'. I was racing a flattrack ATV at the time, and Donny let me bring it to the shop, tear it down, paint it and put it back together. I will always be so grateful for that- thanks Donny. And the times I stopped in on a warm summer night to share a cold pepsi and talk for a "few minutes" would often last for hours. I'll cherish those memories forever... RIP Donny Your friend, Oz

ONE OF MY BEST AND EARLIEST RECOLLECTIONS OF DONALD WAS IN 1971 AFTER THE PARISH FIREMENS PARADE. A FEW OF THE BVILLE FIREMEN,INCLUDING MYSELF, DECIDED TO STOP AT THE CLAY HOTEL FOR A FEW ADULT BEVERAGES. WE HAD A FEW EARLIER WHILE AT THE FIELD DAYS.
IT WAS PRETTY LATE AT NIGHT SO ONLY THE BARTENDER WAS WORKING AND THE KITCHEN WAS CLOSED. BEING HUNGRY, DONALD DECIDED TO GO IN THE KITCHEN AND FIRE UP THE STOVE. SMOKE IMMEDIATELY PERMEATED THE BUILDING AND WE WERE IMMEDIATELY THROWN OFF THE PREMISES. IT WAS LATER DETERMINED THAT PAPER MONEY WAS BEING STORED IN THE OVEN AND THAT IS WHAT WAS CAUSING THE SMOKE.
DONALD THANKS FOR THE LAUGHS AND GOOD TIMES. MAY YOU REST IN PEACE.
