Obituary of Winona Farrell

Please share a memory of Winona to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Winona (Nona) Farrell, 88, died quietly at her home in Baldwinsville. Nona was born in the Bronx, NY and moved to Baldwinsville in 1952 with her growing family. In 1955, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which slowly, but progressively took away her ability to walk, but not her ability to live and raise her 4 children with a spirit of unmatched optimism. For many years, she played golf; went camping in the Adirondacks; spent a few summers on Cross Lake and enjoyed an adapted horse-riding program. She loved the opera and so enjoyed her trips to the Met; in later years, the Syracuse Opera. She was active in the Mother’s Club at St. Mary’s and the Friends of the Baldwinsville Library. Even when MS prevented her from doing some of the things she loved, she always had a smile on her face. Nona is predeceased by her husband, Simeon (2006) as well as her brothers: Arnold, William & John Schellings; and by her sisters: Margaret Schellings and Mary Schellings, RSCJ. Survivors: Charles (Nancy) of Baldwinsville; Andrew (Helen) of Rome, NY; Mary (Chuck) Schmutz of Baldwinsville and Lea (Charles) Van Winkle of Underhill, VT; and by her grandchildren, Becky Molly, Carrie, Jennie, Ryan and Shelbe. Nona’s family would like to publicly thank the Unit 3 and activity staffs at Syracuse Home for the wonderful care she received over the plus two years she lived there. Services: 9:30am Monday August 23, 2010 at Falardeau Funeral Home, Baldwinsville and 10:00am at St. Mary’s Church. Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours are 4-7pm Sunday, August 22, 2010 at the funeral home, 93 Downer St. Contributions: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nona’s name to the National Mujltiple Sclerosis, Upstate New York Chapter: PO Box 23746, Rochester, NY 14692-3746 or to the Syracuse Home Foundation, 7740 Meigs Rd., Baldwinsville, NY 13027.
