Obituary of Norman J. Martin

Norman J. Martin, 84, of Baldwinsville, NY, died Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Iroquois Nursing Home. Mr. Martin was born in Syracuse, NY, the younger of two sons to Mildred B. and Charles P. Martin. He graduated early from St. Anthony’s of Padua High School in December 1943 to join the Army Air Corps. He played basketball and baseball at St Anthony’s and enjoyed the friendships he formed with many other members of the Parochial League. While in the Air Corps, he specialized as a radio operator and gunner on a B-17. Later in WW II; he also served in the OSS. He was honorably discharged in February 1946, and continued in the Reserves until 1949. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1949, and the Syracuse University College of Law in 1952. He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. He was a practicing attorney for 55 years, and a member of the Onondaga County and New York State Bar associations, where he served on many committees. He was a partner in the law firm of Farrell, Martin & Barnell, where he served as Counsel for the Town of Van Buren for 25 years, and many other municipalities and organizations. He was an avid golfer and poker player, a member at Beaver Meadows and the NOMADS, and coached several youth baseball teams. He also closely followed his favorite local sports teams, along with Notre Dame and the Boston Red Sox. He was a communicant of St Mary’s Church, Baldwinsville, NY where he served as a lector for over 30 years. He was a member of The Knights of Columbus. Norm is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn (Darmody) Martin, three children, Melanie (Jim) Pendergast of Albuquerque, NM, Paul (Liz) Martin of Baldwinsville, and Patrick (Rebecca) Martin of Baldwinsville, grandchildren Shaun and Casey Pendergast, Colleen and Taylor Martin, and Connor and John (Jack) Martin. Calling Hours will be held at the Falardeau Funeral Home, from 4 to 8 pm Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at the funeral home, 93 Downer St. Services: 8:30am Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at Falardeau Funeral Home and 9:00 am at St. Mary’s Church, Baldwinsville. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Baldwinsville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the local Chapter of the Alzheimers Association.
