Obituary of Harry McCabe Dodge

Mr. Dodge, 60, of Charlotte, NC was called to our Heavenly Father Saturday, August 15, 2009, after a long and valiant struggle with chronic illness. He was born in Syracuse, NY in 1948, son of the late Harry M. Dodge Sr., and of RoseMary V. Dodge.
He grew up mostly in the West side of Syracuse and later in Plainville, NY. A graduate of Baker High School in Baldwinsville, NY, Mr. Dodge enlisted in the Marine Corps and fought for three tours in Vietnam and Okinawa, serving as a special operator with the elite 3rd force Reconnaissance Company and other units. A patriot and professional warrior, he was wounded on two separate occasions during his time in service but refused a return to the United States, unwilling to leave his comrades behind.
After his discharge from active service, Mr. Dodge went to work for Carrier Corporation, from where he retired after 26 years due to his declining health. Throughout this period of his life he was also highly active in the Plainville Volunteer Fire Department, several times assuming the position of Chief during his service. He was also engaged as an E.M.T. with the affiliated Plainville Ambulance Corps, Baldwinsville Ambulance Corps and Carrier Corp Fire/ Rescue, helping to save lives and help people in distress. Mr. Dodge was also involved for a time with the VFW, Salt City Post 382, helping veterans in the tradition of his father, Harry Sr.
Harry was an avid reader of history and loved imparting lessons about heroes of ages past to his kids. He loved archery, competing professionally, and followed politics and current events closely. He will always be remembered for his untiring sense of humor, love of history and his country.
Mr. Dodge is survived by his loving mother Rose, his beloved wife Marilyn Mechowski Dodge, brother Donald (Sharon) Dodge and sister Susan Dodge (William) Kiggins. He is also survived by his sons Harry M. (Shanie) Dodge III of Plainville, Kelly P. (Debra Pierce) Dodge of Charlotte, Nathaniel W. Dodge stationed at Camp LeJeune; daughters Elizabeth R. (Shaun) Smith of Baldwinsville and Sarah M. Dodge of Tampa. He is survived by 15 grandchildren ; 6 great grandchildren; an aunt, uncle and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services: 9:30am Monday, August 24, 2009 at Falardeau Funeral Home, Baldwinsville and 10:00am at St. Marys Church, Baldwinsville. Burial in Jacksonville Cemetery. Calling hours are 5-8pm Sunday, August 23, 2009, at Falardeau Funeral Home, 93 Downer St.
