Obituary of Anthony Rocco Lofaro

On Friday, August 9, 2019, Anthony Rocco Lofaro passed away in Syracuse, NY at the age of 96. After emigrating with his parents, Giuseppe and Santa (Nicolo) Lofaro from Scilla, Reggio Calabria, Italy in 1928, Tony lived in the Village of Tarrytown, NY for most of his life. After his retirement, he moved to Baldwinsville, NY to be close to his son and grandchildren. He worked in the barber trade for 71 years, starting as an apprentice at the age of 11, and he was the sole proprietor of Lofaro's Hair Styling from 1946 until his retirement in 2004. Tony served in the US Army from 1943 to 1946, working in the Transportation Corps. and at the Officers Club at Fort Dix, New Jersey. When it was discovered that he was a barber, he was often called upon to use his professional talents on his fellow servicemen and superiors. He married Mary Grace Fusaro on August 5, 1951, and together they raised two sons. Tony was very civic-minded and was a member of Phoenix Hose Fire Department, the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion. He was also an avid bowler. He was known by all as a pleasant, generous, and good-natured person. His customers enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere and the social banter he provided in his barbershop. In 1996, he was honored by the Tarrytown mayor and trustees with a Certificate of Appreciation for "Outstanding Service and Contributions to the Residents of the Village of Tarrytown." He was a long-standing active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Tony was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Santa Lofaro, and his wife, Mary. He is survived by his son Joseph (Cynthia) of Baldwinsville, NY, Dennis of Wailuku, Hl, and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held graveside at Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, NY on Saturday, August 24 at 11 am.
